Five Reasons a Fresh 48 Should Be In Your Birth Plan
As a momma of two little ones, I know firsthand how crazy the first couple days with a new little one can be. I mean, c'mon! You just had a baby and you're wanting to share this news with the world! It's so exciting and exhausting to bring a new baby into this world -- especially as the momma ;).
I have to say, with both of my children I have some regrets in regards to the photos we have of them in the hospital. That's not to say that I didn't bust out my camera and take some pictures myself or have some charitable friends who took some beautiful photos of my children, but I do have some regrets. With those regrets, came lessons learned. Lessons like, never give a DSLR to someone who doesn't know how to use it... ahem, I'm looking at you Uncle Johnny. ;)
But seriously, a child's first couple days with their new family are precious, and the photos you have as a family are going to be ones that you'll be forced to look at for years to come - so why not make sure they're beautiful? So here's my list of 5 reasons to hire a photographer to come do a Fresh 48 session for you after birth.
1. You JUST had a baby.
I feel like that should speak for itself. But I'll say it again, you just had a baby! Let someone else fuss over the shots and the perfect angles so that you can fuss over your new baby -- because that's what you should be doing right after giving birth! It's funny, because my husband chose the picture of our son, Ezekiel, to announce that he was born... and if I hadn't been recovering from a C-section I may have pulled the brakes on his choice lol. Hence, why having just had a baby makes you a little less able to think about photography needs. ;)
2. You can never go back to redo these photos.
This one is a biggie. You can always take more photos as they get older, but they'll be bigger, older, and not a newborn anymore. The reality is that you can never go back to the hospital with your brand new baby and redo these intimate moments. There's only one shot to get the photos that you want of your baby. That's a lot of pressure! The last thing you want is grainy, blurry photos of your family's first moments together or under-exposed photos of siblings meeting their new brother or sister. And you don't want to think about blurry, grainy photos while you're recovering from your birth! Like this picture below is literally the ONLY picture of Daniel and I after the birth of our firstborn. Look closely - we're blurry. It's so obvious to me that the shutter speed was TOO slow because we are blurry. I still cherish this photo dearly bc it's our first family photo... but it most definitely could've been better. Am I right?
3. A Fresh 48 is different than a newborn session.
This one is a hard one to explain. I think newborn sessions are great, don't get me wrong. I love the posing, the lighting, the chance for mom and dad to get some rest before taking photos -- but there is just something about having photos of those first few hours as a family. The beauty in the freshness literally melts my heart every time I walk into a new baby's hospital room. The raw, unforgiving at times moments of your new family. The documentary style of a Fresh 48 tells the story of your little one's welcome to the world. You can dress your baby with bunny ears and bow ties all day, but you can't have them swaddled in the hospital basinet and in your arms doing skin to skin.
4. You can have extra time cuddling with your babe.
I'm a huge proponent of new moms and dads spending as much time as they can with their baby before introducing them to family and friends. I'm a huge proponent of skin to skin and new moms only having to focus on feeding their little one, cuddling their little one, and just loving them. Worrying about photos is not something you should have to do, especially when you hire a photographer you trust. They should be SO excited to get to know you, hear about your birth plan, talk with you about details, and spoil you... because you just had a baby!!
5. You won't regret it.
You really won't. I promise. I did my own Fresh 48 session for my second born, and although I think I look swollen and I'm not at my best in some of the photos - I do not regret it. Now, 6 months after his birth, I see those photos and I don't see a newly postpartum, swollen mom but rather a newly in love mom who is so enamored by her new son. Five years from now, I'll probably look at those pictures with a nostalgia I will never know. Twenty years, I'm sure I won't be able to see the photos without tears in my eyes. I don't regret any of the photos we have as a family, but I do know I would regret not having any pictures, let alone pictures that are of a quality that will last a lifetime.
So with that, those are my 5 reasons I firmly believe that photography of some sort, most especially Fresh 48s should be a part of your birth plan.
All the love,
